... Give the body of the panel a bit of rough curvature, and then give it a test fit.
Unfortunately, here, I screwed up.
To bend the patch to match the
body curve, I clamped a chunk of big pipe in the vise and hand bent the
panel over that.
The radius was too small, however, and I wound up with a
set of vague flat bends rather than a smooth curve.
This panel will eventually need a lot of massaging before final paint,
so it's not a huge issue, but it was
kind of a dumb mistake. I
eventually worked most of the lines out, but they still annoyed me.
