Now for the body of the tool. Since I'm setting this up for use on a turret
lathe, I decided to
sacrifice what's known as a "floating tool holder" or "adjustable tool holder"
for the project.
The trick to a rotary broach is that the holder mounts the tool at 1°
to the spindle centerline.
This causes the tool to "wobble" as it rotates, which produces the cutting
action.
Factory cutters and holders have all the angles and distances built into
their design, but
since we'll be making our own broaches, which may vary in length, we'll need
a way to
adjust it to the cutting point of the tool can always be on center. The floating
tool holder
is designed to do just that, sl all we have to do is modify it to hold the
new spindle.
