Under the brace, it turned out a thin portion of the colum had cracked away. I believe this was a "plugged"
portion of the casting, with holes cast in to the column rather than being drilled later. I suspect the cores shifted
a bit during casting, and made a thin portion- which then cracked out at some point in its history.
