I'd decided to replace the stub by screwing in a new part, using- my second mistake-
3/8"-NPT (pipe) threads. My thought processes were that the large OD of the 3/8-pipe
was close to the size of the stub, and that the tapered pipe threads would let me
tighten the replacement part into place very firmly for a leak-free seal.
So I started by drilling out the body to 1/2"...
