Now, after all that, I find out the channel in the saddle is not, for some reason,
actually round. It's flattened somewhat, making me think it had been machined
in two passes of a smaller tool, rather than one pass of a full-size tool.
Easy enough to fix, using a boring head to shave about .020" off the peak of the boss.
