Things got even more interesting when I started taking it apart.
The Kurt "locking" mechanism uses a pair of wedges and a hemispherical element
to provide
some "anti lift" force to the vise jaws. As the jaws are tightened, the wedge
helps pull the jaw down
which keeps the part level and square. The spherical element helps control
any misalignment.
On this unit, not only was there no spherical part, but neither wedge surface
had even been milled.
It was rough cast iron on rough cast iron- on surfaces supposed to slide
slightly against each other.
